Welcome to the Via dei Sepolcri!
On the outskirts of Pompeii, along the western road to Herculaneum, lies the Via dei Sepolcri (“Street of Graves”). Alongside sightly villas, views of the shimmering sea, and glimpses of the nearby islands of Capri and Sorrento lay dozens of Early Imperial (1st c. CE) tombs. While archaeologists had learned quite a bit about these tombs and the individuals buried there, modern technological capabilities now have made it possible for anyone to explore the tombs from the comfort of their own homes!
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Virtual Via dei Sepolcri, where you may now visit a section of tombs along the ancient street. Below, explore all four tombs together created with 3D modeling software. You can take this general look of the tombs or explore the individual tombs by selecting “The Tombs.” From these tombs, you may investigate some of the material finds from the tombs by clicking on “The Finds.” Finally, do you want to see some behind-the-scenes pictures and hear about the development of the project? Click on “The Project!”
